Calico Bush or Kalmia latifolia is an American evergreen shrub. Also known as the Mountain Laurel it is ericaceous growing well in association with camelias and rhododendrons. Gardening lore says, perversely, that whilst foliage looks best when grown in part shade, for optimum flowering place it in full sun. What do those lorers know anyway? This is situated in some serious shade at the northern edge of woodland and although leaning to the light flowers well, particularly this year. For good measure and all those pub quizzes it is also Pennsylvania’s state flower. And the closed buds look just like Iced Gems, yum!
