This morning it rained heavily. Either the Met Office got it seriously wrong or I daydreamed through the weather forecast, subsequently I was mentally and physically ill-prepared for this persistent deluge. So, a little in denial, I encased myself in waterproofs and boldly proceeded on my tour of the garden. When I reached the Med Bed I checked for flower buds on the Sparmannia africana, as has been my wont for the past a couple of weeks, optimistically lifting the top leaves for look for signs of development. Buds I did not find, bugs I did. At least half a dozen assorted shield bugs, spiders and other long-legged beasties, all sheltering under the limey umbrellas. Later, when the rain had stopped and I passed by once again, these same creatures were tentatively venturing out to make the most of the remains of the day.
