The fruits of the twining black bryony, Dioscorea communis, are decorating the bare Hydrangea aspera. In keeping with the spirit of the season I will enjoy these festive baubles; relish in their scarlet opulence. Come the new year our relationship may change; they may yet again be seen as the product of an invasive weed which is growing in one of the most inaccessible parts of the garden. On the other hand, my resolution might be to be more tolerant of this native yam. The fact that it is growing on the bare cliff edge may well influence this decision.
