P1000753 (1024x767)Today was my first day at work after the Christmas break.  It was a day of firsts.  The first gossip on the potting shed sofa, the first goldfinch on the teasel, the first perusal of plant catalogues, the first visitors, the first planting and the first camellia in flower.  When I got home my first seed delivery of the year had arrived, my (oh no I forgot to order!) sweet peas.  And tomorrow will mark the first seed sowing of the year, undoubtedly the first of many.

You’ve been very spoiled on your first…

  2. Beautiful Camellia! What cultivar is it? I have never really had luck with Sweet Peas. Do you have any special tips?

    • The camellia is rubescens major and is usually the first to flower in our garden, with alba pretty close behind. Sweet peas, well we sow one lot in January and another in March in pots in the greenhouse and bung them in the spring. No special treatment, we get good seed from Kertons in Somerset, then cross our fingers!

  3. Perfect, and perfectly captured! Funny to see mention of a goldfinch: I’ve just finished reading “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt. It was a long book, but a great read.
